Some client projects end up in places you do not expect. In this case, drone photography for a new book.
My recent drone photography has been used on the cover of a newly published book about North Berwick West Links, written by Ian McAnany. The book title is North Berwick West Links. The Evolution of a Scottish Golf Classic. It is currently available to buy and collect from the golf professional shop: North Berwick Golf Club Pro Shop It will go on wider release early in 2026.
The book charts how the course and surrounding landscape evolved over time, using early records, paintings, and photography. North Berwick Golf Club also highlights the long history of golf on the West Links, alongside the club’s formation in 1832.
My brief was the cover
When the book lies flat, the front and back form a single panorama of the course. To achieve that, I captured two separate drone panoramas, one for the front, and one for the back. The spine separates them, so the images needed to align in feel and viewpoint rather than stitch into one file.
I shot in the evening during golden hour. The lower sun gave longer shadows and softer colour. That helps it give the scene more depth.
The finished cover shows the relationship between the course, the town, and the coastline. You also get Bass Rock in the distance, a landmark that sits out in the Firth of Forth and holds the world’s largest colony of Northern gannets.
